"Laura Goes to el salvador"
chapter book pitch

Synopsis: A curious young girl travels around the world and finds artists to inspire her own art, and ready to learn things she hasn’t known before. She will learn about art history, culture and traditions along the way. She will discover the different ways art can manifest itself, and fun facts about the places she visits.

Moral of the Story: Never let your curiosity dim, especially when you don't know the answers. Learning can be fun!

Summary: After Laura inherits a magical paintbrush from her mother, Laura finds that she can paint her way to any destination she wishes to visit! Join Laura on her day in El Salvador, exploring the cultural richness the country has to offer. In her journey, she'll meet artists like herself, learn the significance of the national bird, explore different cities, and most of all, witness the different ways art can take shape! What will she discover and where will she go to next?

Illustrations were created with mixed media paper, gouache, and colored pencils, then scanned into Photoshop for rendering and fine detail. Text was created in Photoshop, and the booklet layout was created in InDesign.

BOOK COVER

Our main character is welcoming the reader to her journey with a friendly wave and bright smile, equipped with her backpack filled with art supplies. The backdrop of El Salvador is vibrant with its colorful houses, unique cobblestone street, a beautiful maquilishuat tree, and a majestic volcano peaking behind Laura.

Tia Mari

This spread is meant to teach the viewers a fact about torogozes as the national bird of El Salvador by means of Laura and her Tia Mari. Two torogozes dance around in the air together as they fly above mango trees, framing the warm hug shared by Laura and Tia Mari.

Gloria

The flor de izote is the focus of this spread, the national flower of El Salvador. I spent the most time with this illustration in terms of perspective and composition, because it was inspired by a memory of visiting a flower shop in El Salvador, so I wanted to convey that scene authentically but also keep it in harmony with what the illustration is about.

El Chaman

Also inspired by a visit to Panchimalco, I illustrated Laura demonstrating a playful side to her as she tries to make her own bird call along with the common birds of El Salvador.
